Ongcoy loses Asian Para Games bronze following result reversal

Cyril Cloyd Ongcoy's bronze medal victory on Wednesday at the 5th Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan was rescinded on Thursday

The Filipino para athlete was awarded the medal for placing third in the men’s 1,500 meters T12/T13 event after the disqualification of Uzbekistan's Fakhriddin Khamraev on Wednesday.

However, the Uzbekistan team appealed and the games’ jury overturned the result, giving Khamraev the gold medal.

Erstwhile gold medalist Jordan’s Nabeel Maqableh was relegated to second place and India’s Sharath Makanahalli was given the bronze, moving Ongcloy to 4th place.

"Although it’s painful to finish in 4th place and miss out on the bronze medal, I am still happy because I gave everything I had for our country. Even though we didn’t bring home a medal, I did achieve a new personal best!" Ongcloy said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
