
RANAU: A 27-year-old man was fined RM1,800, or one month’s jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here for engaging in illegal online gambling.
Mohd Ahyar, from Kampung Libang, here, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
A team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Ranau police conducted an operation behind the Ranau Main Market at about 3pm on Oct 17, 2024, following information on illegal online gambling activities.
Mohd Ahyar was suspected of engaging in online gambling using a mobile phone during the operation.
Meanwhile, the caretaker of an entertainment outlet was granted a Discharge Not Amounting to an Acquittal (DNAA) by the Magistrate’s Court here after the prosecution withdrew a charge of operating the premises without a valid licence.
The court allowed the application and ordered that Lojin Bakosoi be discharged without acquittal.
Lojin had been charged under Section 3 of the Public Entertainment Ordinance 1958 for operating a public entertainment premises without a valid licence.
