U Mobile has emerged as the biggest winner in Ookla’s latest Speedtest Connectivity Report for Malaysia. The orange telco has been awarded both the Best Mobile Network overall and Fastest 5G Network in Malaysia for the first half of 2026.
The findings are similar to Opensignal’s recent report, where U Mobile also performed strongly in several 5G metrics including download speeds and 5G availability.
However, it is also worth highlighting that the latest reports were based on tests conducted between January to June 2026. This is a period before U Mobile completely left Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) 5G network. In addition, TM has announced last month that it has completed its migration from DNB to U Mobile for 5G services.
U Mobile wins Best Mobile Network and Fastest 5G
According to Ookla, U Mobile is Malaysia’s Best Mobile Network and Fastest 5G Network based on Speedtest Intelligence data collected during Q1 and Q2 2026. It got a Speedtest Connectivity Score of 80.34 and a 5G Speed Score of 67.26.
When it comes to median 5G download speed, U Mobile leads with 348.73Mbps, followed by Unifi Mobile at 252.02Mbps. For uploads, U Mobile clocked a median 5G upload speed of 34.38Mbps and latency of 31ms.
Unifi Mobile is named the telco with the Best Mobile Video Experience with a video streaming score of 81.73, followed by U Mobile at 79.72 and Maxis at 78.65. It is also ranked the Top Rated mobile provider in Malaysia in terms of consumer sentiment with a score of 37.3 out of 5 stars.
Meanwhile, Yes 5G is awarded the telco with the best 5G video experience with a score of 89.00, ahead of Unifi Mobile (87.53) and U Mobile (87.50).
Ipoh is the fastest city in Malaysia
When it comes to performance by locations, Ookla has also provided the list of fastest cities and regions in Malaysia. Based on their data, Ipoh has the fastest median mobile download speed among Malaysia’s most populous cities with 184.85Mbps.
This is followed by Kuching with a median download speed of 183.83Mbps, Kota Kinabalu at 177.47Mbps, Kajang at 158.65Mbps and Puchong at 145.66Mbps.
When it comes to regional performance, Putrajaya is the fastest with a median download speed of 224.46Mbps. This is followed by Labuan with 149.1Mbps, Selangor at 136.57Mbps, Penang at 134.66Mbps and Sarawak at 131.7Mbps.
U Mobile and Unifi have since moved away from DNB
The timing of the latest network reports is also important. U Mobile completed the migration of all its customers away from DNB on 30th June 2026, with its wholesale access agreement ending effective 1st July.
Since then, U Mobile customers have relied exclusively on the telco’s own ULTRA5G network for 5G connectivity, which is deployed using Huawei and ZTE.
TM has also signed a three-year wholesale agreement with U Mobile for Unifi Mobile’s 5G connectivity and has terminated its previous 5G wholesale access arrangement with DNB as part of the transition.
As a result, the 5G experience for U Mobile and Unifi Mobile users today may be different from what is reflected in Ookla’s H1 2026 results.
During the above reported period, subscribers on these telcos could still benefit from DNB coverage while U Mobile was simultaneously expanding its own nationwide 5G network. Following the migration, there may be coverage gaps where areas covered by DNB are not yet covered by U Mobile’s new 5G network.
At the same time, DNB has started activating an additional 100MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum, effectively doubling its available mid-band spectrum capacity from 100MHz to 200MHz. This could also affect network performance for subscribers with Maxis, CelcomDigi and Yes 5G, as the recent developments would have given more headroom to anticipate increase in data demand.
With three telcos on DNB and two telcos on U Mobile, the second half of 2026 should provide a much more meaningful comparison of Malaysia’s new dual 5G network environment.
