Kota Kinabalu: An entertainment outlet owner was fined RM2,500 or a month in jail for operating without a licence by the Magistrate’s Court Tuesday.

Chia Kim Boon, 38, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie for operating the business without any licence at 1.30am on Dec 23 2023 at the Nautica UUC, University Utama Square, Telipok.

He committed the offence under Section 3 of the Public Entertainment Ordinance 1958 which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or up to a year’s jail, or both, on conviction.

Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Suzie SK told the court that the police raided the outlet and found customers inside the premises.

Police arrested the outlet caretaker, Damelly Masasusi, as the outlet has been operating without a valid licence for three months.

Counsel Lim Ming Zhoong @ Lawrence, representing Chia Kim Boon, requested a lenient fine.

Suzie applied for a deterrent sentence.
