In light of recent state elections, how do we rebrand Anwar Ibrahim to make him more attractive and appealing to the majority of the people in Malaysia especially Malays many of whom voted for Perikatan Nasional coalition that's made up of Bersatu and the Pan Islamic Party or PAS?

Are there any appropriate methods or reasonable approach used in marketing that may be employed to repackage Anwar himself just like the way they did for the "Selling of the President" in the US?

We posed these questions to AI ChatGPT, and it came back with a surprising "to-do list" that has been edited to include some specific examples and relevant comments.

Rebranding Anwar Ibrahim to appeal to a broader audience involves understanding the specific concerns and preferences of Malaysians, especially those who supported the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

Just like the "Selling of the President" approach in the US, here are some strategies that could be considered:

  • Find Common Ground: Identify issues that resonate with the Malays who voted for the Perikatan Nasional coalition, such as economic development, religious values, and social welfare. Frame Anwar's message to align with these concerns.
  • Effective Messaging: Craft messages that highlight Anwar's commitment to unity, stability, and progress while addressing any concerns that voters may have about his leadership style or policies.
  • Visual Identity: Develop a new visual identity that appeals to Malaysians across different backgrounds. This could include a modern logo, colour scheme, and design elements that convey a sense of inclusivity and progress.
  • Social Media Campaigns: Leverage social media platforms to share Anwar's vision, accomplishments, and plans for the country. Engage with users directly and address their queries and concerns. PAS has been successful with TikTok using the platform extensively without relying on the main media channels that are more readily available to the government of the day.
  • Local and Regional Engagement: Hold town hall meetings, seminars, and forums in areas where the Perikatan Nasional coalition has support. This offers a chance for direct interaction and understanding of the concerns of these voters. We must admit that Anwar did use these techniques, but arriving by government helicopter or using other official vehicles for attending events worked against him His use of town hall meetings, although effective, turned out negative when he poorly responded to a young student on the issue of meritocracy.
  • Collaborative Approach: Emphasize the importance of collaboration and coalition building, showcasing Anwar's willingness to work with different parties to achieve common goals. PH did make an effort. However, its Hari Raya gathering in Kedah could have been better positioned.
  • Storytelling: Share personal anecdotes and stories that humanize Anwar and demonstrate his dedication to the people's well-being. The stories being spun by spin doctors do not appear genuine to the Malays who prefer more authentic versions presented by PN through the straight talking approach used by Sanusi of Kedah. Voters love his story and telling techniques presented to them.
  • Community Initiatives: Launch community-focused initiatives that demonstrate Anwar's commitment to improving the lives of Malaysians, regardless of their political affiliations. However, grandiose plans to resolve water woes promising to allocate hundreds of millions may not resonate well with the masses. Such promises sounded hollow because the people know big plans just wouldn't happen.
  • Inclusivity: Show inclusivity by involving representatives from various ethnic and religious backgrounds in Anwar's campaign and policy discussions. There were attempts made, but they were inadequate to change the mindset of many Malays at the grassroots. Anwar's team would have to work more on this issue to get through to the hearts and minds of Malay majority.
  • Economic Empowerment: Highlight policies that promote economic opportunities, job creation, and improved living standards, addressing the concerns of those who prioritize economic stability. Where stability is concerned, Anwar's team would have to work doubly hard to ensure that it is central to Anwar's government. PMX himself must be seen to embrace the concept and does not cause the opposite reaction from amongst investors who seem nervous by PMX incessant barrage against opponents that are seen as roots of instability itself.

AI reminds us to remember that a successful rebranding requires a deep understanding of the target audience, effective communication, and a genuine commitment to addressing their needs and concerns. It's important to approach the process authentically and transparently to build trust and credibility with the voters.

At the moment, trust and credibility for the AI brand among many Malays is at its lowest ebb, particularly in the PN controlled states.
