Malaysians hoped PMX Anwar Ibrahim would transform the education system into the best in the world. His experience, aspirations and goals are indeed noble to make Malaysia an exemplary model of the education system.
Socio-political commentator, writer and dentist Dr Kamsiah Haider, a supporter and known Anwar since 2007, said: “Many of us had hoped that PMX as our Prime Minister would transform our education system. The current and past systems do not hold the potential to make our nation great again.
“To achieve real change in this country, a revamp of the education system is imperative. Otherwise, we risk repeating the patterns initiated since the Islamization of schools after the Iranian revolution. Anwar, during his tenure as the education minister, popularised the hijab in schools, influencing the Malay population.”
Unfortunately, Dr Kamsiah said the current education minister appears to be continuing Anwar's legacy, leading to a continued division within our nation. These students will soon step into roles within government services, becoming future directors of government agencies, GLCs, and politicians.
“It's disheartening to think that our near future might not bring any significant changes. Our education system might not produce technocrats or innovators but rather more religious authorities dictating public lives, akin to the Taliban.
“The further Islamisation of schools, the promotion of hatred and aggression among young children, and the misuse of public funds to defend staff abusing the system are concerning trends. Urgent changes are needed in the education minister's portfolio if we intend to foster economic growth and cultivate world-class talents.”
She was responding to comments on the state of the education system, which is currently deteriorating. Dr Kamsiah reminded PM Anwar and leaders to be fair to all races. Minorities must not be discarded because they have the voting power to reelect the current government if they wish to do so.
Dr Kamsiah hopes Anwar will make Malaysia a nation to be looked up to through these difficult times. He must support the minorities, who make up about 30% and not only focus on 70% of the population, she added.
