As expected, Bersatu is making it difficult for Pas to own the PN brand name.
I have predicted that this will happen before, and now other analysts like Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) are also saying the same thing.
So what is going on ?
Well to cut a long story short, PAS, MIPP and Gerakan wants to keep the name PN for themselves but Bersatu doesn't want to give it to them without a fight.
Does Bersatu really want the name PN for itself ?
No it doesn't.
It doesn't, because even if it owns the PN brand, Bersatu will still lose at the ballot box.
Let us not forget that after GE15 back in 2022, Bersatu has 31 MPs. Today it officially has 19. If you consider that 13 of the 19 MPs it had attended Hamzah's function in Kelantan last week, where he announced the name of his new party, then in actuality Bersatu might have 6 or less MPs on its side.
A party that is being abandoned by its own MPs with such gusto is obviously not going to get anyone to vote for it, even if it carried the PN name.
PAS ok the other hand, can win at the ballot box even if it only carries its own name. If it carries the PN name together with its own name, it might win more than what it can win on its own.
So if Bersatu can't win even if it owns the brand name PN and if PAS can win more than what it can already win with its own name if it had the name PN, then the logical thing for Bersatu to do is just "sell" the name PN to PAS isn't it?
How can Bersatu "sell" the PN name to PAS?
Well, it can come with a seat sharing arrangement with PAS, for example, in the coming state or general elections.
It could also, perhaps try to get PAS to agree to support it to rule one or two states, in return for letting PAS have the PN brand.
So is Bersatu not "selling" the PN name to PAS today a sign that it is playing hard to get? That it is feigning to not be interested in selling the PN name to PAS as a way to to get a better offer from Pas.
Nope. I don't think so.
I truly think that Bersatu is so down and out that it is just acting out from a psychological place.
There is no rationality governing its act anymore - I suspect that it is now operating at a purely emotional zone.
I wouldn't be surprised if Bersatu is just doing what it is doing to indulge in its feeling.
In the way I see, Muhyiddin, Bersatu's head, might quite likely be in that depressing place, where he is looking back at his glorious past, while experiencing an abject state of decline in the present, and find the dichotomy in the experience to be so upsetting, that a enormous level of self pity has welled up in his heart.
The self pity in him is making him desire to cause everyone who has put him at such a loss to suffer a loss themselves, and it is under this mode that he is making it difficult for PAS to have the PN brand.
Muhyiddin likely wants to force PAS to expel Bersatu out of PN, because it will allow him to indulge in his self pity further.
If Bersatu is expelled, then Muhyiddin will at least have the tragic satisfaction of feeling that after all that he has done for PAS, PAS has still betrayed him. That will make him feel like he is a good person - who only wishes to serve the party, country, people, god and race - but he was tragically betrayed by those he trusted, because they cared about themselves more than they cared about being good and doing the right thing
Such a feeling, as tragic as it is, can offer a lot of comfort to a person whose ego is being crushed.
Other than indulge in the tragic satisfaction, Muhyiddin will also likely appreciate the joy of nursing a passionate grievance against PAS.
For the next few years, I reckon that the only thing that Muhyiddin is going to have to fulfil the emptiness in his life, is by taking Pas to court and enjoy the sense of pathos and tragedy that will come with it.
It is likely for this reason that Bersatu is making it difficult for PAS to own the name PN.
