IPOH – An Orang Asli man died after he was believed to have been attacked by a tiger while searching for rattan with a friend in the Korbu Forest Reserve near Kampung Takung, Pos Perwor, Sungai Siput, yesterday.
Lintang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said the victim, Zamberi Angah, 42, was found dead in a bamboo thicket near a logging road, about 200 metres from where the attack was believed to have occurred.
He said the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) received a report on the incident at about 4.30pm, before members of the Wildlife Conservation Unit (UKHM), together with Sungai Siput Perhilitan personnel, rushed to the location.
"Following the information, a search operation led by Perhilitan, together with the police, Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) and villagers, was launched at 6.30pm.
"The victim was eventually found at 6.58pm, with tiger paw prints and several other indications," he said in a post shared on his Facebook page yesterday.
Mohd Zolkafly said the authorities had advised members of the local community to temporarily avoid entering the forest area and urged that photographs of the victim's body not be circulated out of respect for the sensitivity and privacy of the victim's family.
"The incident that befell the victim is deeply saddening and has deeply affected his family and the local community," he said.
In the same post, Mohd Zolkafly said he had visited the victim's wife and children and extended assistance to the family following their loss. –BERNAMA
