
Kota Kinabalu: Oswald Wong Sein Yao was crowned champion of the Sabah Soft Tennis Association (SSTA) Soft Tennis Tournament held at the Likas Tennis Courts last Sunday.
He defeated Fendy Rayner Jimmy 4-2 in the final to take the title.
He had earlier in the final round robin cross over match defeated Kovidh Sharma 4-2 to book his place in the final, while Fendy edged Jayden Jay Ng also 4-2 in his tie.
In the Unimixed Under-12 category, Lucas Wen captured the title and runner-up spot went to Abby Siaw, while the two losing semi-finalists were Wong Tian Le and Alvera Wong.
A total of 47 players including 25 students from SRJK St James took part in the tournament held over two weekends.
The closing and prize presentation ceremony was officiated by SSTA patron Grace Lee. The Nominated Assemblywoman was delighted with the juniors’ performance and commended each of them for their hard work.
She thanked the supportive parents for ensuring the players attend every training session organised by the state body.
Meanwhile, SSTA president Liew Vun Shin expressed his gratitude to Sabah Sports Council director and Malaysia Soft Tennis Association president Dato Shamshuzaman Sulaiman for their support.
He also announced that the Taipei Soft Tennis Association (TSTA) has invited the State’s junior players to a week-long training camp and tournament this December, and the selection for the squad will be based on their performance at the just concluded tournament.
