Kota Kinabalu: More than 50 people took part in an environmental awareness programme at the Telipok River Reserve, Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) here.
Environmental Protection Department (JPAS) Director Vitalis J Moduying said the programme was organised in conjunction with the 2023 National Environment Day.
The programme aimed to enhance awareness among industries and communities in KKIP on the importance of environment, especially river protection.
“JPAS and KKIP Sdn Bhd had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Dec 15, 2022, to jointly manage the environment within KKIP, conduct awareness programmes and various trainings,” he said.
Various activities were held, such as talks, communal survey, candle-making using used cooking oil, river monitoring demonstration, coconut tree planting and releasing fry to the river.
Vitalis also officiated the “Sayangi Sungai Kita” (Love Our River) signage during the programme.
“The responsibility to maintain the environment is shouldered together by all quarters, not merely by the government.
“As such, I call for the cooperation between the industries, local communities, government agencies and relevant quarters to be fortified to ensure the sustainability of the environment.”
