Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's recent appearance at the United Nations General Assembly seems to have left many unimpressed, as images of an almost empty hall circulated on social media.

Comparisons with his predecessor, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has only highlighted the apparent lack of international interest in Anwar's speech.

While Anwar touched on his "Malaysia Madani" vision, the sparse attendance at his speech spoke volumes.

If you watched the live telecast it was very clear that the UN hall was filled with only a handful of delegates, including Malaysian ministers. This underwhelming turnout is a far cry from the enthusiastic reception Tun Dr. Mahathir received in 2018.

In the past, supporters of the Pakatan Harapan coalition were quick to criticize former prime ministers for addressing empty chairs at the UN. That includes Zahid's appearance on behalf of Najib while serving as Deputy Prime Minister.

Now, the tables have turned, and Anwar faces a similar ridicule.

Anwar's speech generated mixed reactions, with some defending his performance as a significant moment for Malaysia on the international stage. However, others labelled it as "boring" and pointed to Mahathir's superior oratory skills.

Anwar's attempt to portray Malaysia on the world stage was overshadowed by domestic controversies, such as his defence of halting the corruption trial of his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The latter's performance at the UN Assembly was no better either. Memories of his poor delivery at the Assembly still makes many cringe.

It seems that, despite the empty seats in New York, the echoes of discontent and scepticism continue to resonate back home. Sanusi MB of Kedah has joined the chorus commenting on Anwar' performance at the UN.

In the end, Anwar's first UN appearance raises questions about his ability to capture global attention and leaves us wondering if Malaysia's international influence under his leadership will be as impactful as he hopes.
