BUDGET authorities are proposing P228.92 million for the government’s electric vehicle (EV) program in 2027 to support the country’s shift toward cleaner transportation.
The proposed allocation under the 2027 National Expenditure Program (NEP) is more than seven times the P32.46 million provided for the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Program under the 2026 General Appropriations Act.
“A secure, reliable, and sustainable energy sector is essential to economic growth and improving the quality of life of every Filipino,” Budget Secretary Kim Robert de Leon said in a statement on Thursday.
“The proposed FY 2027 budget invests in projects that strengthen the country’s energy security while expanding access to electricity and supporting the transition to cleaner energy technologies,” he added.
The higher allocation will support the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Scoping, Implementation and Operationalization in Selected Government Offices, or EVision Project, as well as the establishment of an Electric Vehicle Charging System Testing Facility.
The EVision Project is intended to develop charging infrastructure in selected government offices while the testing facility will strengthen the government’s capacity to assess and test EV charging systems.
De Leon noted that EV adoption was continuing to expand in the Philippines, increasing the need for charging infrastructure and systems that can support the growing number of electric vehicles on the country’s roads.
EVs accounted for 24.7 percent of total vehicle sales from January to August 2026 based on Department of Energy (DOE) data, with 66,685 sold out of an estimated 270,124 in total vehicle sales.
As of August, the country had 1,876 registered EV charging stations nationwide.
Under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, the DOE is tasked with enforcing compliance of registered EV charging stations and supporting the installation of charging stations in public and private establishments.
The department’s Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry has set a target of at least 7,300 EV charging stations for the 2023-2028 period.
