THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Monday seized about 73 kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, valued at P496.413 million, at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The stash is believed to be the largest single drug haul ever intercepted at NAIA.
Port of NAIA District Collector Yasmin Mapa reported that the shabu, which arrived from Mexico, was declared as a "pelletizing machine" and hidden inside the machinery.
Mapa said the shipment arrived last Sept. 26 and was flagged after authorities received a tip about a shipment of dangerous drugs.
The contraband was found at a warehouse in Pasay City on Oct. 2.
"The interception highlights the importance of vigilance and close coordination among Customs units and partner law enforcement agencies, particularly as smugglers employ increasingly sophisticated concealment methods," Mapa said.
Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the seizure sends a strong warning to individuals and groups attempting to use legitimate cargo to smuggle in drugs.
Nepomuceno said the shipment was turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
