Raising Kids in the Digital Era

The interactive forum, “Raising Kids in the Digital Era”, brought together Dr Rajini Sarvananthan, Consultant Developmental and General Paediatrician; Dr Christy Tong Hoe Chin, Early Childhood Education Specialist, Academic & Researcher; and Dr Ilyah Abd Aziz, Gifted Education Researcher and parent to a twice-exceptional (2E) child undergoing accelerated learning.

Technology’s growing role in children’s lives was a key theme. Malaysian studies found that 95.9% of preschool children in Kota Setar, Kedah had used digital devices, while 91.4% of children under five in Petaling District, Selangor had excessive screen time, with half spending around three hours or more a day on screens. The panel emphasised that balanced technology use supports children’s sleep, behaviour, attention and social development.

“As technology becomes an increasingly important part of children’s lives, parents should look beyond simply limiting screen time and focus on how technology is used and its impact on a child’s development and well-being. Open communication, healthy boundaries and active parental involvement can help children develop balanced digital habits,” said Dr Rajini.

“Good health begins with awareness and prevention. Initiatives like this help bring healthcare knowledge and services closer to the community, while encouraging individuals and families to take greater ownership of their health. By connecting with healthcare professionals and learning about preventive care, we can build a more health-conscious and resilient community.”
