A group of passersby saved the life of a young woman who was looking to end it all by jumping off the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge in Kuantan.
Following the rescue, she was handed over to police and further investigations revealed she was going through several hardships that were said to be the triggering factors.
Seen standing on bridge’s edge
China Press reported that a one-minute clip of the incident was shared on social media, where it showed the woman standing on the bridge’s edge and leaning forward slightly while holding onto a lamppost.
Several passersby who spotted the woman then quickly rushed to her side and pulled her down from the bridge.
After doing so, they asked her why she did what she did but all she could was sob incessantly in reponse.
Faced several personal issues
When contacted by the Chinese daily, Kuantan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Zahari Wan Busu confirmed the incident and said the woman was taken to the Kuantan District Police Headquarters.
He added investigations revealed that the woman, the youngest of eight siblings, is a mother of a three-year-old child and is currently in the waiting period (‘iddah’) following a divorce.
“She was previously working at a shop along Jalan Pasar but was fired due to an internal staff dispute.
“We believe the incident was related to life, family, and financial pressures,” he added.
Wan Zahari said the woman had previously lodged a police report for domestic violence and her then-husband was arrested and charged on Dec 23 under Sections 323/326A of the Penal Code.
