The Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Patiala Municipal Corporation on Monday approved development works worth around Rs 16 crore.
The civic body also blacklisted a contractor for failing to execute assigned projects.
The meeting was chaired by Mayor Kundan Gogia and outgoing Municipal Commissioner Paramjit Singh.
The MC will spend around Rs 9 crore on road repairs and Rs 2.32 crore on sewer cleaning. It will spend Rs 2.29 crore on street lights and other beautification projects.
Gogia said the committee had blacklisted BS Builders Private Limited for two years for failing to start road repair works in Green Park Colony, Partap Nagar and the Badungar area despite repeated notices.
“The civic body has also forfeited the firm’s earnest money deposit and bank guarantee, while fresh tenders will be invited for the pending works,” he said.
To strengthen the city’s drainage network ahead of the monsoon, the committee approved the desilting of the Model Town and Jacob drains.
It also cleared the desilting of the main sewer line from Ablowal to Tiwana Chowk.
Other works approved in the meeting included the installation of decorative lighting near Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib and new street lights around Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib, along Rajpura Road, Sirhind Bypass and Sanour Road.
The committee also sanctioned beautification works on Heritage Street, including the installation of modern street lights.
Gogia further said the project would help preserve the city’s heritage character and improve the experience of visitors.
The development works approved in various wards included the construction and repair of roads, renovation of parks, installation of tubewells and laying of new sewer and stormwater pipelines.
In reshuffle, civic body gets new commissioner
In the wake of the National Green Tribunal’s strong observations over the accumulation of garbage at the local landfill site and alleged illegal constructions, the Punjab Government has carried out a major reshuffle in the Patiala Municipal Corporation.
As part of the reshuffle, Municipal Commissioner Paramjit Singh has been transferred. He has been replaced by PCS officer Pooja Sayal. She will assume charge on Wednesday.
The government has also created a new post of the Additional Commissioner, with PCS officer Simarpreet Kaur assuming charge on Monday. The development comes days after large-scale transfers were carried out in the building branch and fire wing of the Municipal Corporation amid complaints regarding illegal constructions and the issuance of fire NOCs.
After taking charge, Simarpreet Kaur said her priority would be to improve the delivery of civic services and ensure timely completion of development projects across the city. She said special emphasis would be placed on strengthening the hybrid sanitation system to transform Patiala into a model city in terms of cleanliness.
