Kota Kinabalu: Former Senator Datuk John Ambrose (pic) has called for Penampang’s electoral boundaries to be reviewed, proposing one additional parliamentary seat and two additional State seats to reflect the district’s population and development growth.
He said Penampang had expanded into a major residential, commercial and economic centre within the greater Kota Kinabalu urban area, while the Pan Borneo Highway was expected to further drive housing, business and investment growth.
Citing Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) data, Ambrose said P.174 Penampang recorded a population of 178,499 in the 2020 Population and Housing Census and 4,896 business establishments in 2022.
“Penampang today is no longer the Penampang of the past. It has grown into a major residential, commercial and economic centre within the greater Kota Kinabalu urban area,” he said.
Ambrose said the precise boundaries of any additional constituencies should be determined objectively by the Election Commission based on population distribution, voter numbers, geographical considerations, local ties, accessibility and future development.
