The Penang State Education Department has taken protective measures after a Year Six pupil was allegedly assaulted, threatened, and humiliated by a teacher at a local school.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang State Education Department (JPNPP) has taken action following a complaint that a Year Six male pupil was subjected to humiliation, physical violence, and threats by a teacher at a school in the Northeast district, near here, recently.
Penang Education Department (JPNPP) director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad said the Northeast District Education Office (PPDTL) has taken action based on findings from the probe into the incident.
“A consultation session involving the parents, PPDTL, school administrators, and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) was held to discuss actions and the welfare of those involved.”
“As a protective and preventive measure, the teacher no longer has direct contact with the pupil and has been referred to the PPDTL Organisational Counsellor for guidance and support,” he said when contacted by Bernama.
He added the pupil has been referred to a guidance and counselling teacher for support and intervention.
Yesterday, the Penang MCA Public Services and Public Complaints Bureau reportedly said the mother of the Year Six boy was disappointed by the lack of appropriate action against the teacher who allegedly subjected her son to humiliation, physical violence, and threats.
A statement from the victim’s parents’ lawyer said the incident allegedly occurred on June 19, after the pupil recited Yasin during a school assembly. The teacher allegedly criticised the Yasin recital performance and physically assaulted the pupil, including hitting the student’s face and hands with a shoe, causing the cheek to become red.
Mohamad Dziauddin said JPNPP said the parents still have several issues with the manner in which the case was handled, and the department remains open to further discussions.
He said JPNPP will continue to prioritise pupils’ safety, welfare, and well-being while maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment in accordance with existing regulations.
“At the same time, the welfare and rights of the teacher are protected by ensuring every action is carried out fairly, prudently, and according to established procedures.
“JPNPP will continue to monitor the matter and take appropriate action based on developments and existing regulations,” he said.
