The first recipient of PERKESO’s LINDUNG 24 Jam dependants’ benefit is a Penang factory operator’s family.

GEORGE TOWN: The next of kin of a factory operator in Penang has become the first recipient of the Dependants’ Benefit (FOT) under the Social Security Organisation’s (PERKESO) Non-Employment Injury Scheme, or LINDUNG 24 Jam, which came into effect on June 1.

PERKESO said Muhammad Hafizi Muhammad Rizal, 22, died in a road accident in Merbok, Kedah on June 12 while travelling to a friend’s house after finishing work in Sungai Petani.

It said a review found that Muhammad Hafizi was an active contributor eligible for coverage under LINDUNG 24 Jam, although the accident occurred outside working hours and was unrelated to his official duties.

“Before June 1, the deceased would not have qualified for benefits because the accident occurred outside working hours. However, under LINDUNG 24 Jam, his next of kin are entitled to a one-off Funeral Benefit of RM3,000 and a monthly Dependants’ Benefit of RM378,” it said in a statement today.

PERKESO said the monthly benefit would be paid to Muhammad Hafizi’s parents for life, while his four siblings aged below 21 would receive the benefit until they reach that age.

According to PERKESO, the case demonstrates the importance of expanding social security protection through LINDUNG 24 Jam, which covers contributors against accidents outside working hours.

The organisation also cited two other Penang contributors who received LINDUNG 24 Jam benefits after sustaining injuries at home.

Mohamad Zain Kia, 33, fractured his wrist after falling from a ladder while trimming rambutan tree branches at his home, while Tan Pai Fen, 49, suffered burns after being scalded by hot water.

Both received the Temporary Disablement Benefit (FHUS) and related assistance according to their eligibility.

PERKESO said the cases showed that accidents outside working hours could occur at any time, highlighting the protection provided under LINDUNG 24 Jam.
