Penang KPDN seizes 7,200 counterfeit 2026 FIFA World Cup jerseys worth RM360,000 in a raid, arresting a local man selling them online
NIBONG TEBAL: The Penang Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has uncovered the sale of counterfeit 2026 FIFA World Cup jerseys by seizing 7,200 jerseys from various famous brands worth RM360,000 in a raid on two premises in Jalan Inderawasih Indah, here today.
Its director S.Jegan said in a simultaneous raid on a business premises and a house at 11 am, they arrested a 29-year-old local man who is believed to be the owner of the premises that was selling the jerseys online.
“The operation was carried out as a result of intelligence for about three weeks with the Special Branch E5 of the Penang police contingent headquarters, following the increase in demand for jerseys of teams competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup which began last month.
“This operation is a proactive action by KPDN which expects the demand for World Cup jerseys to increase and we are conducting test purchases via e-commerce platforms and focusing on sellers from Penang before successfully tracking down the actual location of their operations,” he told reporters after the raid at the business premises today.
He told reporters that the man who carried out the activity alone used the e-commerce platform including live sales sessions on social media by operating from his home which is located about 1 kilometre from the business premises to market the counterfeit jerseys.
Jegan said the man used the business premises as a place to store and package all the jerseys before sending them to buyers by courier from a store hidden behind the closed premises.
He said the fake jerseys are sold at prices ranging from RM35 to RM50 per piece depending on the grade and quality, with the man carrying out the activity for the past few months and was able to make thousands of ringgit profit every day.
He said the KPDN confiscated all the jerseys for illegally using registered trademarks, in addition to several business documents being seized to assist in the investigation.
“We believe the man obtained the supply of all the jerseys from China at cheap prices and further investigation is being conducted under the Trademark Act 2019,” he said.
