Sir Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster has revealed that the “Maggie May” singer is still full of “voracious energy” despite his recent health troubles.
Last month, the 81-year-old cancelled the remaining dates on his US tour after undergoing heart surgery, needing to take four weeks off to recover. His representatives said at the time that he was “doing very well” after the procedure and had “returned to his normal daily activities”.
Now, Lancaster has shared a fresh update on how her husband is doing, revealing that he’s itching to get back to work.
Appearing on ITV’s Loose Women, the model, 55, said that he had returned to his usual day-to-day routine as she spoke about what keeps their marriage exciting.
“Well it was this kind of voracious energy that he had and he still has at 81!” she said. “He’s still looking at the tour he’s got next year, he’s still recording new music...”
“Whether it's him going to the gym three times a week, you know, it’s incredible to watch and so inspiring and for our kids as well to look up and admire.”
Stewart and Lancaster wed in 2007 after eight years of dating and share sons Alastair, 22, and Aiden, 15. He’s been married twice before and has six children from previous relationships.
Earlier this month, Lancaster reassured Stewart’s fans that he would “come back stronger than ever” after undergoing his coronary stent procedure. She said that while he was “back at full speed in his day-to-day activities”, he had been advised by doctors to cancel the tour “because you know the risk factors involved”.
She also revealed that they “did have to explain to the doctor what Rod’s performances are like”, with the singer running around on stage “for nearly two hours with four different costume changes because he’s sweating through everything”.
In August, Stewart announced that he was cutting his US tour short to recover from heart surgery, having to cancel performances in Ohio, Illinois and Mexico, and a six-night stretch at Las Vegas venue Caesars Palace.
“I’m already feeling better and very much on the mend,” he said in a post on Instagram at the time. “I want to thank the doctors, nurses and everyone who has taken such wonderful care of me.
“I am deeply disappointed to miss these shows and sorry to let my fans down, but I look forward to getting back on stage and having a good time with you all again soon.”
The singer had previously postponed shows in Cincinnati and Cleveland following medical concerns and was forced to cancel events in May and June after suffering with a sinus infection.
