Busted star James Bourne has shared a health update with fans after revealing he needed “major surgery to extend his life”.
The musician left fans concerned in September last year when he was forced to pull out of the band’s UK and Ireland tour just 24 hours before they were due to hit the stage.
Citing “health problems”, the guitarist and vocalist said at the time: “There’s a lot of information I still don’t have about my condition but my bandmates, management and I are unanimous in deciding that I should focus on the medical stuff for now.”
Bourne later told fans he would need surgery and reports recently claimed this had taken place. However, in an update on X on Thursday (17 September), Bourne sought to clarify the situation.
“I haven’t had any surgery yet,” he wrote. “Some people forward me articles saying it’s been done, which isn’t true. I wish it had, I should know more information soon.”
It comes after Bourne was seen for the first time in months earlier this week, posing for a photo with Hilary Duff’s husband Matthew Koma as the Lizzie McGuire star performed a string of gigs in London.
Bourne, 43, could be seen beaming as he stood alongside Koma in a snap posted on the latter’s Instagram Story.
While the Busted star hasn’t been able to perform, he did release new music in July, debuting concept album Murder At The Gates in collaboration with Spring Awakening playwright Steven Sater.
The album is being developed into a murder mystery musical and Bourne said in July: “I didn't want my health to stop me from promoting this project because I've put 13 years of my life into it.”
“There was a fear of not finishing it,” he told The Sun. “But I knew I had to finish it and give this to the people.
“With everything going on with my health, I have been given the gift of time. I was given a lot of time back when I wasn't touring. It was like turning a negative into a positive.
“It was such a shame to have to drop out from the tour, because I love touring so much. But you have to turn negative into positive. They're the conversations I've had with my closest friends. I wanted to take the time I'd been given and deliver this album.”
Then comprised of Bourne, lead singer Charlie Simpson and bassist Matt Willis, Busted burst onto the music scene in 2002 with their debut single “What I Go to School For” reaching number three in the UK Singles Chart.
Their self-titled debut album then reached number two in the UK Albums Chart, before “You Said No” gave the band their first number one single in 2003.
Busted then split in early 2005, following Simpson’s departure. Some eight years later, Bourne and Willis united with McFly to form the ‘McBusted’ supergroup before Simpson returned in 2015 and the original trio hit the road together again.
