Perak Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad denies plans for a snap state poll, stating the matter has never been officially discussed and he will not seek the Sultan’s consent for dissolution.
IPOH: The Perak government has firmly denied any plans to hold a state election in the near future, dismissing a recent newspaper report as completely baseless.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad expressed surprise at the claim, stating the matter has never been discussed on any official state government platform.
He was responding to a recent English-language daily report which suggested Perak would hold a state election as a ‘test case’ ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).
“I was personally surprised to read the article because this matter has never been discussed,” said Saarani.
He explained that to hold a state election, the Menteri Besar must first seek an audience with the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, to propose the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly.
“If the proposal is not consented to, it could be considered as the Menteri Besar’s resignation,” he added.
Saarani emphasised that such a scenario is unlikely as he will not seek an audience with Tuanku for that purpose.
He made these remarks at a press conference during the handover ceremony for the Dana Kreatif Perak@PORT (DKP) for the 2025/2026 edition.
The Menteri Besar further noted that the state government still has more than a year remaining to fulfil its administrative mandate for the current five-year term.
“I see no possibility of a state election being held in the near future,” Saarani concluded.
