In the midst of Hari Raya celebrations, a concerning trend has emerged - the rising popularity of lemang cooked in pitcher plants.
While this unique twist on a traditional favourite may seem tempting, it comes with a host of health risks and environmental concerns that cannot be ignored.
According to The Sun, consuming lemang cooked in pitcher plants can lead to stomachaches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea due to ingesting remnants of insects, small animals, and their feces trapped inside the plants.
This poses a serious threat to public health, especially during a time of festivity when food is at the center of celebrations.
Public health specialist Dr. Ain Aliyya Azaharuddin has warned about the dangers of consuming lemang cooked in pitcher plants, emphasising the risk of ingesting harmful substances if the plants are not properly cleaned.
The residual organic matter inside pitcher plants can also serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and other microorganisms, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses.
Furthermore, the widespread harvesting of pitcher plants for lemang poses a threat to the environment.
Botanist Abdullah Razin Rofli highlighted the importance of pitcher plants in maintaining biodiversity and soil fertility. Pitcher plants provide food for various organisms and contribute nitrogen to the soil, making them crucial for ecosystem health.
As tempting as it may be to try lemang cooked in pitcher plants, it is important to prioritise health and environmental conservation.
Choosing lemang cooked in bamboo not only ensures a safer option but also promotes environmental sustainability. Let us not sacrifice our long cherished culture and love for the environment just because of fleeting culinary trends that threaten health and safety for every human beings here and everywhere!
