Three-term Subang MP Wong Chen steps down from his parliamentary role, with his resignation taking effect today at 5pm.
PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Wong Chen (pic) has resigned as the Member of Parliament for Subang, with his resignation taking effect at 5pm today.
Wong said he handed his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul on Aug 5, allowing parliamentary officers three working days to prepare for the vacancy.
“On Aug 5, I met with the Speaker and handed over my resignation letter as Member of Parliament, effective Aug 10 at 5pm,” he said in a statement today.
Wong said he and Johari had agreed to keep details of the resignation confidential until it took effect.
He also announced that the honorific “Yang Berhormat” would be removed from his billboards, signage and correspondence by next month.
The three-term MP will hold a press conference at 11am on Wednesday, where he is expected to explain his decision.
Wong’s resignation follows Johari’s earlier confirmation that the Subang MP had informed him of his intention to step down and had given reasons for the decision.
At the time, however, Johari did not confirm whether Wong had formally submitted his resignation.
The resignation comes amid recent speculation over Wong’s position within PKR and questions over access to constituency allocations.
Wong had previously claimed that his parliamentary office was denied access to the MyKhas Portal, a government-managed system used to process constituency allocations and Projek Mesra Rakyat (PMR) applications.
Wong described the MyKhas Portal, managed by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister’s Department, as a vital platform for submitting, managing and processing applications for constituency allocations.
He had also become increasingly critical of PKR’s direction and its handling of issues including corruption, while saying he was not asked to campaign for the party in the Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections.
He previously said the lack of involvement reflected a mutual feeling and that it was time for him to move on.
However, he has yet to confirm any move to leave PKR or join another party.
Wong was first elected as the Kelana Jaya MP in 2013. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2022 after the constituency was renamed Subang, securing landslide majorities in both elections.
