THE Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) has confirmed that its president, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, will not be nominated for the position of Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN).

PAS Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hasan made the announcement today, stating that the decision was made after discussions and agreement within the party's leadership.

"Based on the confirmation from PAS's highest meetings, I can confirm that the candidate we will propose for the position of PN Chairman is not the president of PAS," Takiyuddin said during a press conference at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

He added that the position of Chairman of PN does not necessarily have to be held by the president of one of its component parties.

Takiyuddin, who is also the Deputy Secretary-General of PN, explained that the coalition's constitution does not restrict the highest leadership position to the president of a member party.

"The constitution states that the PN chairman shall be elected by the members of the Supreme Council and shall hold the position as long as the Supreme Council deems it necessary," he said. "Nowhere in the constitution does it state that the chairman of PN must be selected from among the presidents of its component parties."

The announcement follows the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, President of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU), as the Chairman of PN on December 30 of last year. The coalition now faces the task of selecting a new leader to guide the opposition alliance moving forward. - January 26, 2026
