PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) will seek a court order to suspend the cancellation of its registration, escalating a legal battle with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) just days before the Melaka state election campaign enters a critical phase.
PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition would challenge the legality of the cancellation and seek to halt its implementation and consequences pending a court decision.
He said the RoS cancelled PN’s registration today, two days before the Kuala Lumpur High Court was scheduled to hear the coalition’s application to stay earlier enforcement action.
The timing has raised concerns within PN, with nomination day for the Melaka election just 11 days away, Takiyuddin said, alleging that the sequence of actions suggested possible bad faith and political motivation.
PN had written to the RoS on Oct 14 requesting that it refrain from further action until the court proceedings were heard, he said.
“A government that respects the rule of law should have allowed the court to decide on the application and explain why even two days could not be waited,” he said in a statement.
Takiyuddin said the RoS issued its notice on Sept 22, the day the dissolution of the Melaka state legislative assembly was announced, suspended PN’s activities the following day and cancelled its registration today.
He also claimed the decision was inconsistent with an earlier written position in which the RoS had reportedly said it had no authority to intervene in relation to a PN Supreme Council meeting held on July 16.
Takiyuddin warned that deregistration could affect the coalition’s political activities, assets and office-bearers.
“Administrative powers carrying such significant implications for the people’s choice and the democratic process should not be exercised without clear reasons and respect for ongoing judicial scrutiny,” he said.
He added that PN would seek an explanation from the Attorney-General when its application for a stay came before the High Court on Thursday.
Takiyuddin said PN’s component parties remained united and urged members and supporters to remain calm, comply with the law and allow the court process to take its course. - October 20, 2026
