Police in Gua Musang arrested four locals suspected of smuggling six Indonesian and Myanmar nationals from Kota Bharu to Kuala Lumpur on Oct 4.

KOTA BHARU: Police have arrested four locals suspected of being involved in smuggling six foreigners in an operation at Jalan Gua Musang-Lojing here on Sunday.

Gua Musang district police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo said the suspects, comprising two men and two women aged between 19 and 36, were believed to have transported the foreigners from Kota Bharu to Kuala Lumpur.

He said at about 3 pm on Oct 4, a team from the Gua Musang district police headquarters (IPD) tailed three suspicious vehicles from Jalan Gua Musang-Kota Bharu towards Jalan Gua Musang-Lojing.

“The three vehicles attempted to flee after noticing police presence but were successfully stopped after a chase.

“An inspection of a Toyota Vios found six foreigners, comprising three men and three women from Indonesia and Myanmar, who failed to produce valid travel documents,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Sik said police also seized three vehicles, a Toyota Vios, Honda Jazz and Mini Cooper, and five mobile phones to assist investigations. A substance suspected to be methamphetamine weighing about 1.45 grammes was also found in one of the vehicles.

He said the main case is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, while one of the suspects is separately being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“Police are still conducting further investigations to track down other individuals involved, including members of the smuggling network,” he said.
