Postal shake-up paused as Royal Mail braces for Christmas peak

  • Royal Mail has delayed the final stage of its second-class delivery overhaul across 107 remaining hubs until January to focus on the Christmas peak.
  • The restructuring involves shifting second-class post to alternate weekdays and removing Saturday deliveries, and has already been deployed in nearly 1,100 locations.
  • The pause follows criticism from Prime Minister Andy Burnham over delivery failures and warnings that the government could take further action.
  • Royal Mail said that first-class service quality has improved by 9 per cent, though first-quarter performance fell short of targets set by regulator Ofcom.
  • The business is hiring 22,000 temporary Christmas staff to handle seasonal volume, having recently announced 2,500 head office job cuts.
