A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Peru's southern Andes Mountains on Thursday afternoon.
The quake struck at 1 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT) at a depth of 66 kilometers (41 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was 38 kilometers (24 miles) northwest of Upahuacho, in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region.
Shaking was felt across several parts of southern Peru, including the Ica and Arequipa regions.
Luis Vásquez, head of Civil Defense, told the RPP radio station that “no damage of any kind has been reported so far.” Yony Reyes, mayor of Parinacochas province, also confirmed no damage in the capital, while the Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami threat.
Peru experiences regular seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” A magnitude 7.9 earthquake previously hit the Ica region in 2007, killing nearly 600 people.
Thursday’s quake comes after an earthquake struck Colombia last week, killing at least 314 people with another 262 still missing, President Abelardo De La Espriella said Wednesday.
And in June, Venezuela was hit by twin 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude quakes, which led to a national death toll currently standing at 6,300 people.
