Gus Poyet feels Chelsea were lucky to win at Tottenham on Monday night.

The Blues finished 4-1 winners, with Spurs going down to nine men, but former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Poyet was unimpressed.

He told BBC Sport: "I am sure that when they were still 1-1, Mauricio Pochettino was probably fuming.

"From a tactical point of view it should have been one of the easiest games Chelsea will have this season, by far. There was too much space in behind the Tottenham back four. The back four was really high and it was just a matter of a well-timed run and a simple pass. You would expect a Premier League player to do it nine times out of 10.

"Chelsea were missing completely every single time those passes and those runs until the 75th minute when they scored the second goal.

"If the game had stopped before the 75th minute I am sure Pochettino would have been so disappointed. There was a happy ending but for 75 minutes it was quite difficult to understand the quality of the offensive Chelsea players.

"Imagine if [Tottenham's] Son [Heung-min] had scored a second goal for Spurs in the last minute of the game to make it 2-2 with 9 v 11?

"Imagine the reaction there would have been, even for the future of [Chelsea manager Mauricio] Pochettino because that would have been a massive situation, a really bad situation for Chelsea.

"They are lucky that didn't happen and they managed to win it comfortably in the end."

On what's next for Chelsea, Poyet also said: "If you look at the result, Chelsea should feel more confident now after beating one of their biggest rivals 4-1 away from home. They should be really confident to go into the next game.

"But if we analyse only the performance, until the 75th minute [when Chelsea went 2-1 up], it was a worry. There were things that, if they couldn't do it yesterday with those spaces, I don't know how they are going to do it in the future if they don't get this confidence into their game, right now."
