Prime Minister visits Numbak fire victims, hands out assistance

Kota Kinabalu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim handed over Federal financial assistance of RM1,500 each to 111 heads of households affected by the Kampung Numbak fire during his visit Friday.

The affected families also received food baskets from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) as part of continued relief assistance following the Aug 30 fire.

The RM1,500 special assistance comprises RM500 from the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), Prime Minister’s Department and RM1,000 from Nadma.

The Aug 30 fire affected 202 stilt houses in the settlement covering Kampung Lok Buta, Kampung Lok Poring and Kampung Sabang Lama and claimed the lives if three children.

Anwar called for efforts to be expedited to ensure families who lost their homes in the fire can rebuild their lives in safer and more dignified conditions.

He said children affected by the fire must also be helped to return to school as soon as possible and resume their normal lives.

“I was deeply saddened to learn that the tragedy also claimed the lives of three children aged between four and eight,” he said.

On Sept 9, City Hall (DBKK) Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said eligible fire victims could rebuild their homes at the site, with the area to be reorganised into proper plots following inspections and measurements to determine genuine occupants and prevent disputes.

Also present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud and Kota Kinabalu MP cum Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin.
