With property tax dues touching Rs 108 crore, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation on Thursday directed officials to expedite recovery efforts. They have also been told to identify defaulters and issue notices to ensure effective collection of the dues.
The directions were issued during a meeting chaired by Municipal Commissioner Vinay Kumar on Thursday.
‘Regularly monitor targets’
The MC commissioner directed officials to pay a special attention to major defaulters and ensure regular monitoring of collection targets. During the meeting, officials said the total outstanding property tax dues stood at Rs 108 crore.
Of this, nearly Rs 40 crore is pending from taxpayers whose dues exceed Rs 2 lakh.
The MC has already collected around Rs 4.30 crore in property tax during the first two months of 2026-27.
‘Launch awareness drive’
Kumar instructed officials to undertake a comprehensive public awareness campaign to encourage people to pay their property tax. He said 100 per cent waiver on interest applicable on property tax dues for 2024-25 was available only up to June 30.
He directed officials to ensure that this information reached the maximum number of taxpayers so that they could take advantage of the concession and clear their dues on time.
Kumar stressed that property tax was one of the MC’s primary sources of revenue and played a crucial role in funding public welfare and development works.
“Timely payment of property tax is the responsibility of every citizen,” he said urging people to clear their property tax before June 30.
‘Identify major defaulters’
Kumar said the Municipal Corporation would act tough against property tax defaulters. “Major defaulters will be identified and served notices on a priority basis. Taxpayers who fail to clear their outstanding dues within the prescribed time-frame will face action in accordance with the provisions of the law,” he said, He said if required, the Municipal Corporation could also resort to the sale of properties to ensure the recovery of pending dues.
