
A student of the Punjabi University, Patiala, was allegedly molested and sexually harassed by an unidentified youth on a moving bus from Patiala to Chandigarh, local police officials confirmed here today.
The police registered an FIR under Sections 74, 75(1) and 351(2)(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Patiala (Rural) police station on Wednesday.
Though the incident allegedly took place on April 23, it came to light only after the Chandigarh Police informed the Patiala police about it.
According to police officials, the student, after reaching Chandigarh, approached the Chandigarh (North) Police Station and narrated the incident to women police personnel posted there.
Acting on her complaint, the Chandigarh police registered a Zero FIR against an unknown person on April 24 and later transferred the case to the Patiala police for further legal action.
Following this, an FIR was formally registered at the Patiala (Rural) police station. Police officials said investigations were under way to identify the bus involved and record statements of the conductor and driver.
The police officials were also examining CCTV footage from the Patiala bus stand and collecting technical evidence to trace and arrest the accused youth.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused allegedly boarded the bus at the Patiala New Bus Stand and got off at Bahadurgarh town.
