KUALA LUMPUR - Public transport operator Rapid KL has adjusted shuttle bus logistics at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today following intense fan backlash over severe transit delays and crowd management failure on the opening day of the Formula 1 event.
Disappointed spectators flocked to social media yesterday following the opening practice sessions, reporting complete crowd-control meltdowns, broken queueing systems, and multi-hour delays to board return buses.
Some fans were left stranded late into the night at pickup points around KLIA and persistent bottlenecks at the circuit’s perimeter.
Responding to the outcry, Rapid KL insisted its initial shuttle bus deployment was executed according to arrangements agreed upon with event organisers, but confirmed adjustments have now been put in place.
“Following the feedback received, Rapid KL, together with SIC and the relevant agencies, has made improvements to the passenger pick-up and drop-off arrangements.
“These improvements have been implemented from today to ensure smoother and more orderly passenger movement,” Rapid KL said in a statement today.
The operator noted that traffic flow and passenger movement were smooth and under control as of 11 am today.
“Rapid KL will continue to monitor the situation with SIC and the relevant agencies to ensure smooth passenger movement and a better Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix (GP) experience for everyone,” it added.
Clarifying its scope of duty, Rapid KL specified that its operations cover the direct management and movement of buses and passengers according to stipulated arrangements, while overall road traffic and zone management remain under the purview of event organisers and enforcement agencies.
The operator assured attendees that it is working closely with all stakeholders to ensure logistical operations run without further friction for the rest of the race weekend.
“Rapid KL appreciates the patience, cooperation and feedback from passengers in helping us improve the travel experience throughout the event,” it added.
SIC is hosting the three-day 2026 F1 Gulf Air Bahrain GP, which concludes tomorrow, as a temporary substitute host for the prestigious race.
Formula 1 confirmed Malaysia as the race host in July following a joint agreement between F1, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain. - October 3, 2026
