Relocation of port cargo damaging residential roads, claims Yong

Kota Kinabalu: The ad hoc and reckless relocation of certain shipping operations from Sepanggar Port to Kota Kinabalu Port has severely damaged residential access roads in Signal Hill, claimed former Chief Minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

He said the shift compelled heavy trucks to use the Likas coastal road, leaving drivers with limited alternatives following the structural failure and closure of the Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens bridge.

According to Yong, load restrictions on the temporary Bailey bridge subsequently diverted round-the-clock heavy haulage into residential streets leading to Jalan Signal Hill.

He noted that the access stretch connecting Hakka Hall to Signal Hill Road, which was paved in 2021 during his tenure as a nominated assemblyman for local traffic, was never designed for heavy vehicles.

Urging the government to deliver a holistic logistics plan for coastal roads and bridges, Yong added that his proposal last August to upgrade Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens has yet to receive a response.
