The Panchkula district administration on Tuesday issued a 10-day ultimatum to shopkeepers to remove street vendors operating outside their premises, failing which action would be initiated against them.

The direction was issued by Deputy Commissioner Satpal Sharma in a meeting with representatives of various market associations at the Mini Secretariat.

Seeking cooperation from shopkeepers for orderly functioning of city markets, the DC said the Haryana Shehari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) would issue notices and initiate legal action against any shopkeeper found violating the order after the 10-day deadline. The DC said while a concession of one to two feet might be permitted in the public corridor outside shops, any goods displayed beyond the prescribed limit will be confiscated.

HSVP, MC to initiate drive

During the meeting, officials had highlighted that unauthorised carts, food stalls, and indiscriminate parking in markets cause inconvenience to shoppers and lead to traffic congestion.

Sharma said the HSVP, Municipal Corporation and the Police Department would jointly launch a special anti-encroachment drive to ensure the orderly functioning of all markets in Panchkula.

Officers to be accountable

HSVP officials have been directed to designate an officer for each market. The officers will be held personally accountable for complaints regarding illegal encroachments within their jurisdiction. He said the civic body would also undertake the repair and upgrade of public toilets.

Responding to complaints regarding the Sector-20 market being used as an employee pick-up point by some companies based in Baddi, he directed the police to issue challans and relocate the pick-up point elsewhere.

Presidents, general secretaries, and representatives of market associations from Sectors 7, 9 and 20 were among those who attended the meeting.

Municipal Commissioner Vinay Kumar, HSVP Estate Officer Virendra Lathar, ACP Vikram Nehra, HSVP SDO Balraj and JE Gurnam Singh were also present.
