At the end of April, in the village of La Loche in Canada, four puppies were trying to survive in the cold and snow.
The puppies only had a small piece of cardboard to lie on to protect themselves from the snow. They were huddled together in a ball, trying to keep warm.
When passers-by spotted the puppies, they were heartbroken.
A quick response
Fortunately, once the initial shock of the discovery wore off, the passers-by did the right thing. They immediately contacted rescuers from the Humboldt and District SPCA to report the abandoned puppies. The rescue team arrived quickly at the scene.
The puppies were freezing cold when they arrived at the shelter. Their carers spent a long time warming them up. The vet who examined them estimated the little ones to be around four weeks old. The litter consisted of three females and one male, all Husky crosses.
In need of care
The puppies were covered in lice and needed several baths to remove the pests and restore their soft, healthy coats. For now, the little ones are still being cared for at the shelter. They are resting and regaining their strength after their terrible ordeal in the cold.
One thing is for sure: these little puppies are true fighters! The rescuers will continue to care for them until they are old enough to join their forever families.
