Residents seek action on strays

Kota Kinabalu: Residents of Kampung Tg Batu Keramat are urging the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) to take immediate action over a pack of stray dogs that has been roaming the village and attacking pets.

Resident Zulkifli Ahmad said he turned to the media after his cat was mauled by the dogs, hoping to highlight the seriousness of the problem to the authorities.

He said several of his family members had also lost their cats to stray dog attacks in the area.

Zulkifli claimed that complaints lodged with the MPT earlier this year resulted in only two dogs being caught, while the rest of the pack continued to roam freely.

“I worry about the safety of residents. Today it is cats being attacked, but what if these dogs attack our children or other villagers one day?” he said.

He urged the MPT to take more effective action instead of making occasional visits without resolving the problem.

Zulkifli said between seven and eight stray dogs could be seen roaming the village during the day and at night.

He said his cat, Hitam, was attacked by the pack on Wednesday night and suffered severe injuries, with its limbs nearly torn apart. Hitam later died from its injuries.

“I tried to chase the dogs away, but this only made them more aggressive. I could only watch helplessly as they tore into Hitam,” he said.
