Kota Kinabalu: Two men were arrested on suspicion of trafficking 63.55kg of methamphetamine (syabu) worth about RM3 million in Penampang on Feb 27.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said in the 9pm raid, a team from the Sabah Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) detained two men who were in a vehicle at a supermarket parking lot.

“Upon inspection, they found four big boxes containing packets of syabu weighing 63.55kg worth about RM3 million that were placed in the back of the vehicle,” he told reporters here, Wednesday.

He said the duo, aged between 30 and 33, were believed to be on their way to deliver the drugs when their gold Toyota Land Cruiser was intercepted by a team from the Sabah Contingent Narcotics Crime Investigation Department.

“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of four large boxes containing drugs. “Initial investigations revealed the seized drugs were brought in from Peninsular Malaysia via courier and were intended to be smuggled to a neighbouring country,” he said.

Jauteh said both suspects tested negative for drugs and have no prior criminal records.

However, investigations suggest that the duo had been actively involved in drug trafficking for over a year, acting as couriers for a larger syndicate.

“They were paid between RM300 and RM500 per kg of drugs transported, amounting to approximately RM3,000 for this particular delivery.

“The suspects are currently in police custody and remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code until March 7, 2025, to assist in further investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction,” he said.

He also said the police seized assets worth RM188,399, including RM899 in cash, RM14,000 worth of jewellery, five luxury items (watches and branded bags) valued at RM13,500, and two vehicles — an Audi A5 (RM60,000) and a Mercedes-Benz (RM100,000) in a follow-up seizure.

“The total value of seizures and confiscations amounts to RM3.243 million, with further investigations underway into other assets, including bank savings and movable/immovable properties,” he said.
