RM5,600 fine for having gambling equipment

Kota Kinabalu: Four people were fined RM5,600 by the Magistrate Courts, Thursday, for having gambling paraphernalia.

Mursadah Rusli, 25, and Nuraini Abdul, 23, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie for committing the offence at 3.40pm and 5.50pm, on Jan 27 and Jan 28, respectively, in separate locations in Inanam.

Mursadah and Nuraini were each fined RM1,000 or a month’s jail.

Daniall Dinie Syafiq Jailani, 22, and Nonoi Julbasa, 75, admitted to committing the offence before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles at 3.15pm and 4.20pm, on Feb 3, this year and Sept 20, 2023, respectively, in separate locations, here.

The four were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act, which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

The court heard from the prosecution that the police went to the premises following public tip-off and arrested the four at the said location.

Police also seized handphones, mobile printers, lottery tickets, printed papers and money from the four.

Unrepresented, the four asked for leniency.

The court ordered Nonoi to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.

In another case, a 30-year-old man is jailed 14 months for having drugs.

Faisal Najir pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely for having 0.16gm of syabu at 1.30pm on Nov 11, 2023 in SESB, Inanam.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, which provides for a fine up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail on conviction.

In pleading for leniency, Faisal said he has to take care of his mother.

He was ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department upon his release for deportation.
