You may be able to eat rice, vegetables and chicken for RM5 at Deen Bistro in Desa Sri Hartamas even though the restaurant is not part of the Rahmah Menu programne for B40.

Dean Bistro is a spanking new Nasi Kandar restaurant in contrast to other tired brands like Pelita, Mallar, or Bismi the three other outlets offering relatively similar cuisines in and around Desa Sri Hartamas, opened its door in October 2022.

We went in and asked whether we could have a meal for RM5. The server said he would be glad to offer us plain rice vegetables and one hard boiled egg for RM5. But he suggested we check with the manager and the cashier's counter.

When I told him I wanted to write about the possibility of buying a meal for RM5 at Deen Bistro he called the boss. The boss told me that they are not part of the Rahmah Menu programne but if I wanted to have a meal for RM5 it was possible. The manager talked to the server in Tamil, and smiled "Yes we'll offer you some chopped chicken, rice and vegetables for RM5".

Avoid RM5.50 coconut if you are on a budget meal at Deen Bistro. Credit: Rahim

The server quickly dished one serving of 60 grams white rice into a plare, added a ladlefull of fried cabbage seasoned with tumeric and three strips of curried chicken. Then he poured a variety of sauces on top of the rice and handed me the plate.

I am not a nasi kandar enthusiast but it was tasty and if I did finish the whole plate I was sure it would not go hungry for the whole day.

A waiter brought me a cup of plain water and charged me RM0.30 extra. Then I made a mistake I ordered a whole coconut to kill the spiciness. It cost me RM5.50.

My advice is don't order a whole coconut if you were on a budget. It'll cost you as much as a RM5 Rahmah Menu meal. Stick to a lukewarm water of RM0.30 sen.

Anyway, my plan next, is to check out other nasi kandar restaurants everywhere to find out how many more offer RM5.00 meals for the people who cannot afford an expensive plate of rice with fancy dishes available at a place like Deen Bistro.

The selection of dishes is quite amazing. But the cleanliness of the plate is something that other nasi kandar restaurants ought to emulate.

I have yet to see a nasi kandar restaurant as clean and well managed as Deen Bistro. It's open 24 hours. They have a very good satay outlet too in the evening.

Go Nasi Kandar hunters! Another place for you guys to check out.

Location: Deen Bistro is at No 2, Jalan 31/70a, Desa Sri Hartamas, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.
