Kota Kinabalu: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch has collaborated with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) to promote road safety and strengthen professional competency through a Road Safety Audit (RSA) Hand-Holding Workshop 2026.
Held at Hotel Mercure, Kota Kinabalu, on Oct 17, the workshop attracted about 40 participants, including Public Works Department (JKR) engineers, IEM members and other engineering professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge and qualifications in road safety auditing.
BEM Accredited Checker Committee Chairman and IEM deputy president Chen Harn Shean, highlighted the importance of professional competency, continuous learning and engineers’ role in improving road safety standards.
Participants received practical guidance on RSA application procedures, professional requirements and systematic road safety assessments to support safer infrastructure development.
Chen outlined the general requirements for prospective Road Safety Auditors, followed by a joint session with Aik on application completeness and common shortcomings encountered by applicants.
A case study of an RSA application also provided participants with practical insights into the application process and professional expectations.
Road Safety Audits were essential for identifying potential road hazards and recommending appropriate safety improvements at various stages of road development.
Strengthening expertise in road safety engineering is particularly important as Sabah continued to develop and upgrade its road infrastructure, including the Pan Borneo Highway and other strategic projects under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 development agenda.
