SHAH ALAM - The death of a stray dog called Rocky during a catching operation in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Port Klang, quickly became one of the country's most widely discussed animal welfare cases, drawing strong reactions across social media.
As more details surrounding the incident emerged, several celebrities and influencers found themselves under scrutiny for comments made before the full facts were established.
Some of them publicly apologised for their statements, while others deleted their posts after reviewing fresh information and there were those who continued to defend their stance.
Here are four public figures whose responses became part of the wider conversation surrounding the case. All information presented is accurate at the time of publication.
1. Mek Yun
Content creator Mek Yun, whose real name is Wee Yun Nee, became one of the first social media influencers to publicly acknowledge that she had commented prematurely on the incident.
In a statement shared on Threads on Aug 2, she admitted that she had formed an opinion based on incomplete information and had only viewed the situation from one perspective.
She said she should have waited for explanations from all parties and for the investigation to establish the full facts before making any public comments.
Mek Yun accepted full responsibility for her mistake, apologised to everyone who expressed disappointment over her actions—particularly those affected by her earlier video and confirmed that she had deleted the video from her social media platforms.
She also thanked those who corrected her and said the incident had taught her to be more responsible and thorough before sharing opinions publicly.
Her apology came after the Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) released further information stating that Rocky died after an individual allegedly caused a commotion while enforcement officers were attempting to loosen the capture rope during the operation.
2. Kilafairy
Actress Syakila Nisha Jahangir Khan, better known as Kilafairy, faced heavy criticism after expressing an emotional reaction on social media against an individual she believed was responsible for Rocky’s death.
The backlash stemmed from several posts, including one where she wished the individual allegedly involved would "rot in hell" and made remarks targeting his family, saying "may your entire family be struck by misfortune."
She also drew criticism for replying to a follower’s edited image depicting the man with a pig’s head by commenting "even pigs are more noble than him."
The posts spread widely online before she later issued a two-part apology on Threads.
Kilafairy admitted her language had been excessively harsh and described it as a poor choice of words. She thanked followers who privately advised her and expressed hope that society would become more compassionate and fair towards both humans and animals.
However, while she apologised for the language she used, critics pointed out that she did not directly address the fact that the individual had not been formally identified, charged or convicted, nor did she initially remove the posts containing the person's image.
She later said she had reviewed statements from all parties involved and hoped the matter would ultimately be resolved fairly and peacefully.
3. Sherry Ibrahim
Actress Sherry Ibrahim initially stood firm despite mounting criticism over her comments on the Rocky case.
She had earlier shared a photograph of an individual while expressing anger over Rocky's death, prompting criticism from social media users who argued she had reached conclusions without first understanding the complete sequence of events.
Responding to the backlash, Sherry maintained that there were lawful and humane ways to deal with stray animals without causing them harm. She also said she would never regret showing compassion towards Rocky and believed anyone found responsible should face appropriate action.
Although she indicated she had no objection to removing her post, she said she wanted authorities to first release an official explanation of what had happened.
Her position changed after reviewing additional information provided by news reports and the local Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT).
Following those clarifications, Sherry announced that she had deleted her earlier Threads post out of respect for the explanations given and to allow investigators to carry out their work without unnecessary interference.
She also expressed hope that the controversy would remind everyone to verify information carefully and respect ongoing investigations before making public judgments.
4. Nabila Huda
Unlike several other public figures whose comments focused on assigning blame, actress Nabila Huda Suhaimi used the incident to highlight broader concerns over animal welfare.
In an emotional Instagram post, she appealed directly to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to personally look into the incident.
Acknowledging the Prime Minister's wider responsibilities, she pleaded for authorities to hear the concerns of animal lovers, saying society's hearts were repeatedly broken by cases involving abused, tortured and killed animals.
Nabila also called for stricter legislation and harsher punishments for animal abuse, arguing that such offences reflect society's overall level of compassion rather than being isolated incidents.
Rocky case became a lesson on responsible public commentary
Beyond the individual reactions, the Rocky controversy evolved into a wider discussion about responsible use of social media, public accountability and waiting for verified facts before making allegations.
The incident sparked widespread outrage after videos of the stray dog being captured in an operation in Port Klang, circulated online.
Subsequent statements from residents, KRT and MBDK indicated that Rocky died after an individual claiming to be the dog's owner allegedly attempted to pull the dog away while enforcement officers were loosening the capture noose, resulting in the animal being pulled in opposite directions.
KRT urged the public to avoid speculation and allow authorities to conduct a transparent investigation.
