SHAH ALAM - A telephone conversation between The Yang Dipertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and King of Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa led to an agreement for the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix to be held at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.
The discussion took place after the Bahrain Grand Prix faced uncertainty following disruptions to the Formula 1 calendar caused by the armed conflict in West Asia.
King Hamad contacted Sultan Ibrahim to discuss the possibility of Malaysia hosting the event, said a statement posted on Sultan Ibrahim’s official Facebook account.
“The conversation, held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, paved the way for discussions involving the Malaysian Government, the Bahrain Government, Formula 1 and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA),” the statement said.
Following the discussions, an agreement was reached for the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix to be held at Sepang, marking the return of Formula 1 racing to Malaysia after the country last hosted the championship in 2017.
The development follows the close relationship between Sultan Ibrahim and King Hamad, who have maintained a personal friendship since 2017. The relationship has also contributed to stronger ties between Malaysia and Bahrain, including Sultan Ibrahim’s State Visit to Bahrain in 2025.
The announcement of Sepang as the venue for the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix was welcomed by Formula 1 fans in Malaysia and the region.
The event will mark the return of Formula 1 to Malaysia after a nine-year absence and will be hosted at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit, which previously held the Malaysian Grand Prix from 1999 to 2017.
