KUALA LUMPUR – The Road To Gold (RTG) committee is prepared to consider re-admitting national track cycling star Datuk Azizulhasni Awang into the elite programme should he meet the required criteria.

RTG coordinator Datuk Stuart Ramalingam said the committee remains open to welcoming Azizulhasni back into the programme after the “Pocket Rocketman” produced a string of encouraging performances in recent competitions.

However, Stuart stressed that the RTG programme has clear selection guidelines and every athlete must satisfy the established requirements before being included in the prestigious initiative.

“We hope Azizul’s improving performances will enable him to return to the RTG programme.

“We are always open to having Azizul back in the programme. But as everyone knows, the RTG criterias are very clear.

“If he manages to break into the world’s top eight rankings, he will automatically qualify for re-entry into the programme,” he said when contacted.

The Terengganu-born cyclist recently delivered an impressive showing at the 2026 UCI Track World Cup, claiming two gold medals in the keirin and two bronze medals in the individual sprint.

He carried that momentum into the Japan Track Cup, where he secured a silver medal and two bronze medals in the Keirin Series 1 and Individual Sprint Series 2 events respectively.

Azizulhasni remains one of Malaysia’s most successful track cyclists, having won a silver medal in the keirin at the 2020 Summer Olympics and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. - May 20, 2026
