The staff was attempting to cross a flooded bridge when he was swept away by strong river currents

A SABAH Electricity (SE) staff is feared drowned after being swept away by strong river currents while attempting to cross a flooded bridge in Keningau last night.

The man, in his 30s, had been working with two colleagues at a substation in  Kampung Nuntunan Apin-Apin before the incident.

Two others managed to escape, while the victim was carried downstream after losing grip of a rope.

Keningau Fire and Rescue chief Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said a distress call was received at 9.57pm and a nine-member team was deployed.

The victim had yet to be found as search efforts continue with the support of police and villagers.

SE Sdn Bhd confirmed the incident in a statement, saying rescuers had been mobilised and search operations were ongoing.

“Our priority is the safety and welfare of the staff involved, while providing full support to the family,” it said.

A total of 2,879 people from 817 households have been displaced across six districts in Sabah.

Authorities confirmed 13 deaths, with 24 evacuation centres currently operating in Beaufort, Penampang, Tawau, Membakut, Papar and Putatan. - September 17, 2025
