Sabah fail to hit 40-gold target

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah maintained its eighth position, but fell short of the 40-gold medal target at the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor, securing only 30 golds by Monday’s closing.

Although this surpassed the 29 golds won at the previous Sukma in Sarawak, two years ago, Sabah’s total medal count also dropped significantly from 120 (29 golds, 36 silvers and 55 bronzes) to just 98 (30 golds, 27 silvers and 36 bronzes).

Sepak takraw was the biggest gold contributor this time, repeating its five-gold haul alongside one silver.

Athletics and pétanque secured four gold medals each.

Athletics also brought home seven silver and three bronze medals, while pétanque added one silver.

Karate did well to win three gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Other sports that won medals include sailing (two golds, three bronzes), wushu (two golds, three bronzes), artistic gymnastics (two golds, one silver and one bronze), archery (two golds, one silver and one bronze), pencak silat (two golds, two silvers and three bronzes), shooting (two golds), swimming (one gold and two bronzes), lawn bowls (one gold), boxing (four silvers and two bronzes), muaythai (three silvers and three bronzes), weightlifting (one silver and two bronzes), football (one silver), E-sport (one silver), golf (one silver), diving (two bronzes), fencing (two bronzes), judo (two bronzes), cycling mountain bike (one bronze), rugby (one bronze) and tenpin bowling (one bronze).
