Kota Kinabalu: Avid golfers are offered an opportunity to enjoy a dynamic and colourful day of sport and camaraderie at the 1st SGCC Mixed Greensome Open 2025 scheduled on October 18 at the Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC).
The mixed team event organised by SGCC’s captain committee 2025/2026 will adopt a stroke play - alternate shot format.
Organising chairman William Chee said to add a strategic twist to the game, each mixed team (1 male + 1 female) will tee off on every hole, better tee shot will then be selected before alternating strokes until the ball is holed.
“This engaging format ensures both players contribute equally and keep the pace exciting throughout the round.
“Handicaps will be combined and averaged to determine the team handicap. For example, a male player with a 24 handicap and a female player with a 36 handicap will form a team handicap of 30. The maximum individual handicaps allowed are 24 for men and 36 for women.
“Players will tee off from designated tees – blue for men and red for women – with the tournament commencing in the afternoon session,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Club president Ian Yong, who was present, said they have received encouraging response with about 40 teams from within Sabah having confirmed their participation to date, and they are targeting 50 teams in total including those from other states.
“The idea of organising this tournament to be held for the first time here in Sabah came about because as a premier club, we decided to do something different.
“We want to bring along other clubs in Sabah and outside the State together for the fraternity of the golf-loving families.
“At the same time, we are also trying to attract more young working adults and also ladies to participate, although we have received quite a number of junior partnerships,” he said.
The entry fees are RM90 per player (SGCC member) and RM130 per player (non-member) and they include buggy use, prize presentation and high tea.
The three main categories to be staged are Team Gross champion, Nett Category A (50 per cent of lower handicap) and Nett Category B (50 per cent of higher handicap).
Cash prizes ranging from RM200 to RM800 will be rewarded to the top six finishers in each category and the committee reserves the right to adjust prize values or categories as needed.
In addition, there will be novelty prizes such as “Bulls Eye On The Fairway” and “Chip into the Bucket”, as well as a special “Best Dressed Team” prize to celebrate fashion and personality on the course.
