Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) is setting its sights on securing its third overall championship at the Ijtimak Perdana Agensi Agama Seluruh Malaysia (IJPAM) national-level tournament, to be held in Skudai, Johor, next week.

More than 200 athletes will represent Sabah at the event, according to State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif, who is also the State Islamic Affairs Exco.

“Our target is to once again emerge as overall champion, God willing. The contingent has undergone long-term training, and we hope they can deliver,” he said during the flag handover ceremony to the contingent, Friday.

Sabah was crowned overall champion when it hosted the tournament last year.

Also present at the ceremony were Jheains Director Datuk Jumain Abd Ghani, Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) President Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin, and State Mufti Datuk Bungsu @ Aziz Jaafar.

Ariffin reminded the athletes to uphold Sabah’s good name and to use the tournament as an opportunity to foster unity and cooperation among religious agencies across the country.

“Sports is not only about competition, but also about friendship, brotherhood, and knowledge-sharing, as an Islamic convention will also be held alongside IJPAM,” he added.
